The effect is softened by abundant planting – raised vegetable beds, potted roses, espalier apple trees and herb borders. Mature multi-stem trees offer welcome shade, and Santa Barbara daisies somehow find root in chinks in the stone. A gardener’s garden, then, but an approachable one. Structured, but not formal. And that’s an achievement here, considering the expanse of stone and gravel on display.
