Outdoor kitchen in the Tweed Valley, Scottish Borders

This “easy-breezy” outdoor kitchen is situated under a “little covering” – a sandstone archway of grand proportions – in the occasionally-windy Scottish Borders. The little covering makes for a magnificent and most unexpected kitchen area; set behind full-height frameless glazing, underneath a balustraded double perron staircase that connects the Baronial manor’s state rooms to the walled garden and kitchen area. It’s very in-keeping and marries the century-spanning design elements beautifully – the house was built in 1866 for the sum of £20,000; the outdoor kitchen was constructed in 2023 for a bit less than that.

Jan, the owner, is a year-round griller – helped by the sturdiness and shelter afforded by the kitchen and stonework. He’s also a repeat Bull barbeque owner – “the best-made barbeques in the world” – and appreciates the solid reliability and design features that make the outdoor kitchen “easy-breezy” for entertaining.
